"Cities are the future of the human race, and Jeff Speck knows how to make them work." (David Owen, staff writer at the New Yorker)

Nearly every US city would like to be more walkable - for reasons of health, wealth, and the environment - yet few are taking the proper steps to get there. The goals are often clear, but the path is seldom easy. Jeff Speck's follow-up to his best-selling Walkable City is the resource that cities and citizens need to usher in an era of renewed street life. Walkable City Rules is a doer's guide to making change in cities, and making it now.

The 101 rules are practical yet engaging - worded for arguments at the planning commission, illustrated for clarity, and packed with specifications as well as data. For ease of use, the rules are grouped into 19 chapters that cover everything from selling walkability, to getting the parking right, escaping automobilism, making comfortable spaces and interesting places, and doing it now!

Walkable City was written to inspire; Walkable City Rules was written to enable. It is the most comprehensive tool available for bringing the latest and most effective city-planning practices to bear in your community. The content and presentation make it a force multiplier for place-makers and change-makers everywhere.

  • I’ve just ordered another six copies of this book. I’ve now ordered fifteen copies total. I LOVE this book and have bought copies to give to Planning Commissioners, bike / pedestrian / transportation advocates, and local lending libraries. Jeff Speck has created a ‘CliffsNotes’ compilation of wisdom that includes concepts from other urban design / transportation books that I’ve read. This book has great potential to change thinking and help us transform our cities to create truly livable places. The book is very approachable and light hearted. I highly recommend this book!
  • Great book! Will make you rethink what your city should actually be doing to improve its walkability! Every city planning official should be made to read this book and implement changes accordingly. I have reached out to my local city department to urge them to conduct a walkability study!
  • In the sometimes dry literature of urban planning, this is a surprisingly fast and fun read, full of intriguing and counter-intuitive suggestions.
  • Clarity and simplicity of the presentation. 2 pages per rule. Brilliant!
  • A great read, offering solutions to consider in creating better Communities for Living.
  • “Walkable City Rules” is a new excellent book by Jeff Speck on how to make our cities walkable. As an urban planner in Houston, Tx, I welcome any new ideas to accomplish this.
  • Not a huge amount of new material for those who have read Speck's other works, but it is repackaged in a format that is approachable and easy to consume for the neophyte and expert alike.
  • Book came warped in a soaked box. Can’t use it as a gift, as I had intended.
